Over 80 years of faithful service in Nashville, Tennessee.
In 1942, 110 members who had split from Mt. Nebo Baptist Church gathered on the lawn of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Thompson alongside Rev. I. Golphin. After prayer and deliberation, the name “Ebenezer” was chosen — drawn from 1 Samuel 7:12 — to signify that the Lord had helped them.
For one year the congregation worshipped in a storefront at 28th Avenue and Clifton Road while two lots were secured on 27th and Morena Street. Despite wartime scarcity of lumber, deacons and trustees labored by hand to build the sanctuary. In 1943, the congregation marched down the rocky road singing “I'm On My Way to Canaan Land” to open the new edifice.
Ebenezer holds the distinction of being the first church in Nashville to feature a tuba player in its music ministry. Rev. Golphin's radio sermon, “Play Ball for Christ,” aired over WNAH Radio Station.
In 1952, after nine years of fruitful service, Rev. Golphin went home to be with the Lord. Rev. N. Samuel Jones was then called as Pastor, serving faithfully for twenty-five years. Dr. Nehemiah Douglas followed, installed December 8, 1977, and served until his passing in October 1994.
In May 1995, Rev. Michael E. Williams became Pastor. During his tenure, several new ministries were established and two additional properties were purchased on Morena Street. In 2003, the church's name was officially changed to Ebenezer Community Church.
Rev. Cornelius Hill served as Pastor from February 2014 to September 2016. In December 2017, Rev. Granville “Sonny” Lyons III was selected by unanimous vote as the sixth Pastor and was installed on January 28, 2018.
